Galway’s rich tradition of athletics continues to flourish, and leading the charge among its rising sprint stars is Sophie Farrell. At just 18 years old, this South Galway AC athlete is already a familiar face on the podium, blazing through the short sprints with a calm confidence that belies her years.

Balancing the pressures of elite sport with the demands of studying for her Leaving Certificate at Seamount College in Kinvara, Sophie is a shining example of how determination and discipline can take you far, both on the track and in life.

Trained by European Masters Medallist Jim Phelan, Sophie has carved out an impressive résumé. She is the reigning U18 Indoor Champion over 60 metres, holds an All-Ireland medal for the U18 Outdoor 100 metres, and has already stepped up to claim an U19 60m Indoor All-Ireland medal as well.

This season has started brightly too. Lining up alongside top sprinter Joan Healy at the Indoor League, Sophie clocked a sharp 7.88 seconds for the 60 metres, a clear signal that she’s ready to mix it with some of the best in the country.

Her regional dominance is equally impressive. She’s the current Connacht U19 100m Champion and has also secured titles at the Schools South Connacht Championships in both the 100m and 200m.

If you need a picture of her ambition, just look at the featured image at the top of this article ,Sophie standing tall beside the track, National Medal proudly around her neck. It’s not just a symbol of past success; it’s a reminder of where she’s headed.

Speaking to Run Republic, Sophie was refreshingly clear about her plans for 2024: “To reach some new PBs, win another All-Ireland, and hopefully meet a National Standard!”

Her club, South Galway AC, had nothing but praise for her work ethic and character, telling us: “Sophie is a wonderfully dedicated and hard-working athlete who continues to inspire the younger people in our club!”

With her trademark focus and a big year of competition ahead, Run Republic has no doubt that Sophie will turn those goals into reality. And as she continues to make her school, club, coaches, and family proud, we’ll be right here, watching her light up the track every step of the way.
